Many people these days are eager to know how to start an SEO consultancy business in 2016. I have a group on Facebook where many of the event bloggers now have started to get into the SEO or call it commercial client consultancy business. However many have no idea and try to apply the same event blogging or just spam techniques to rank client sites and worst they have no idea in how to get clients.
In this post, I will write about how to start your commercial SEO business if you are in a large city. I meant a city, not a small tiny town where people never use Google.

Then read the SEO guides by Neil Patel as he has put down some time to create some great content. Read it all in the week and take notes. Because later you can ask me on PBN Demystified Facebook group for clarification.
Then pick some articles that talk link building. Google “Backlinks” and head to the article on Backlinko and read it all. Now keep in mind these are for knowledge acquisition which you will greatly need when you are about to do SEO work for your lead gen sites and commercial businesses that you will be consulting when the business starts to boom.
Now pop into OM HQ blog of mine and go through the online technique articles. Pick what you like and while reading when you get tired, check the OM HQ website in general and see how I have done. Check the site, the blog and even the presentation of SEO business in a city like London where competition is huge. If I can do it, you can do it as well. But you will have to commit to do it and acquire a ton of knowledge to succeed and advance.
Then head over to Source Wave, Alex Becker has freely given some good insights about commercial SEO and even getting started guides. The site gives much knowledge and if you do read the beginners guides and the videos you will gain the knowledge you need. Get an idea about selling SEO services and that’s like the only blog that comes with some videos.
If you did go through all the above you would be having a good knowledge and now it is time you attend to the business aspect.
What you should do to start a SEO business in your city?
Put up a website – I started this blog while I organised as a freelance SEO consultancy website. Check this page > http://fernandobiz.com/services/seo-consultancy/seo-consultant-london/ which I have edited few times by now and even had it redirected as the home page some time back, like for an year.
See how I’ve done it. I actually added the clients and things later but before that I didn’t have any claim other than I ranked for “SEO outsourcing” worldwide on #2 spot in 2014. That’s what helped and led me to get picked up in my business and with proof of my skills on the web when prospects asked me, Can you do it for us and rank us to be competitive ?
You must have some proof of your skills to be able to sell easily. That builds confidence to move on !!
Have the site nicely done. Check and learn from sites that are already ranking for the target terms you aim to go after.
What are the target terms you should work on?
- SEO consultant + city name
- SEO expert + city name
- Freelance SEO consultancy + city name
And if you can go after terms like > “SEO agency/company + city name” , this will be super tough but worth the efforts.
The above work should take at least 5-6 months including your knowledge acquisition phase at a rapid rate and assuming you are a smart one 👀
Ok just imagine you got a call, be good at the phone PR. Listen to some YouTube clips on how to sell over the phone. Grant Cardone is good at teaching these skills, so go check him out.
Is ranking on top 3 spots on your country specific Google enough? Hell no. I was lucky when I did rank well in early 2014. I got most of the clients by ranking for “SEO Harrow” and “SEO consultant Harrow” **Pretty low search volumes but they did work well. So try to identify some easier terms to get started.
Now do you think doing just above and you will get a floor load of leads all day? Maybe if you are lucky 😎
So what should you do next?
Build a SEO blog that talks about SEO and local business consultancy. Check this blog and its early day posts.
Go make you LinkedIn profile 😎 and connect with local business owners in your city/areas country. Do this for a month and ideally you should have at least 200-300 good connections and well done LinkedIn profile. Check mine if you want to find and connect 🙃
Now you should be having at least 15-20 well done articles on your blog. Check http://ebusinesslondon.co.uk/blog/ and see how the blog posts are done by an ClickDo intern who wrote on that site and even went about to rank for terms like “freelance SEO consultant London” on top 5 spots on Google.co.uk in a short time with my guidance. All work was done by the guy who is based India and I will soon announce the name and highlight him on his blog by end of this month. He cracked the SEO skills mastery code properly.
So then what?
Message to people you are connected on LinkedIn saying something like below: (exact words which landed clients in London)
It’s great to be connected with your on LinkedIn. I see you are local business owner and runs your (business name).
I just published a post that talks about SEO for your industry and how SEO can be intilized to gain more traction through the web.

**The above even worked for me to land a top luxury hotel in Euston London as my client.
What happens is when you do personalized messages like this and if you have good profile on LinkedIn, those top people do have a look. And if theme is right and they are having a need, then boom, you might get a reply or call back.
I’ve landed many companies just via my blog post and by sharing on my LinkedIn profile. I was connected with the owners of these after they saw my posts and contacted me asking, “so you doing SEO for this niche ha? I would like to have a chat”. I met them once, closed the deal and they are still one of my clients for over many years.
So you see how you can do it. Keep in mind this is a tight niche and it aims easy. But if you want it and have the skills then jump in and start the work.
Ideally start your SEO consultancy business as a side project to acquire you knowledge by extensive reading. Have your site/s ranked and have the proof under your belt.
The above tips are mostly applied and possible if you are living in a larger city. If you are living in a small tiny town, move on and do yourself a favor. Life is too short to operate in a small pond. That’s why I moved to London to play the big game where the competition is at the highest.
