These days everyone is wondering what the “Holy Grail” of SEO is. Whether it has been changed so much and what is working now. As a SEO consultant who consults for over 30 local businesses in the United Kingdom, I do research for the best ways to rank my site and clients sites on the SERP’s
Normally what works well is backlinks that are pointing at a money site. If you can get high authority backlinks to your sites without any issues you can get your site to the SERP’s top places for the target keywords. I mean there can be competitions and will effect where you rank on the SERP’s. But the fundamental fact is whoever has the best backlinks pointing at their site gets the best treatment form Google. It’s a little different with yahoo and Bing, you can still take SEnuke or GSA and shoot backlinks and rank on those two search engines.
Back in the day SEO’s used to look at the PR (Toolbar Page Rank) to measure domains strength its effectiveness when getting backlinks, but things are changed now as Google did not do PR tool bar figure update for over 10 months now. Last update was done in December 2013. If you check www.fernandobiz.com you can see it still has a PR of 0, but it’s full on power house if you check here: https://checkpagerank.net as the site used to get so many edu and government backlinks during the last few months.
So now you see the point, you should not be worried about PR any more, it’s good to have it but now there is another way to check a domains power.
Btw if you do not know what is PR, know right now.
It’s a metric the public can see, when they have tool bar like SEO quake or put it on a PR checking tool. And the PR goes 0 through 10, so if you have a PR closer 10 (which is impossible) that’s good. Anything between 3-5 is really good and works/worked well when having a backlinks to a money site.
However due to Google not updating the PR, the site that should have P4 are still on PR0 even though they gained a lot of authority during the last 10 months. Like www.fernandobiz.com and www.onlinemarketinghq.co.uk two of my sites that drives the most of traffic for my SEO business.
Also the other thing is site that lost PR (their authority) still have PR and look strong on people’s eye, if they are to buy the PR domains for PBN’s and other SEO activities.
So you should now know that PR isn’t good any more and you should watch for some other metrics if you were to buy aged domains or get your articles published on someone’s blog to get backlink.
So now you must be thinking how can you judge a good powerful URL if you were to buy it or get link from?
There are several ways I use, first I use to look at the updated backlinks profile through majestic SEO if the backlinks looks pretty good (coming from trusted high DA domains) that’s good sign. And then I move to check the Moz Domain Authority.
Domain Authority represents Moz’s best prediction for how a website will perform in search engine rankings. Use Domain Authority when comparing one site to another or tracking the “strength” of your website over time. We calculate this metric by combining all of our other link metrics—linking root domains, number of total links, MozRank, MozTrust, etc.—into a single score.
See below, that’s how it looks when it’s installed on your browser.
It’s said that Moz DA is similar to PR in that it shows the “power” of a website. You can see the Moz DA number, which actually goes up to 100. Trying to pass 75 for www.fernandobiz.com by end of this year… As now it’s 47 you can see on the below image. The Moz DA goes from 0-100.
As a reference SEO expert assumes the below when it comes authority compares to PR:
- Moz DA 15-20 (Small power, ≈ PR1 or PR2)
- Moz DA 20-30 (Medium power, ≈ PR2 or PR3)
- Moz DA 30+ (Large power, ≈ PR3 or PR4+)
- Moz DA 50+ (Mage Power houses, ≈ PR5 or PR 6+)
However this isn’t exact, as there are many variation that’s been taken to effect, but looking back at the results I can say this is a pretty close assumption.
To check the DA of any site just go to Moz Open Site Explorer here.
I’ve got this data after reading so many case studies on the internet, and I can say that PR is not a very good fact that you should look when it comes to domains. It’s the backlinks profile and the Moz Domain Authority.
Also you may see the Trust flow of a site on Majestic SEO, which I will explain in a next article. And things like how to quickly increase the TA if you are to sell your domains.
Finally, if you are looking to study your competition and how powerful they are, if you can out rank them on SERP’s don’t worry about their PR figure any more, just look at the other metrics I just explained, like Domains Authority and Trust flow of their site.
