Yes it is possible become a consultant in a day and I will show you how to be one today when you finish reading this post.
Most people think they are not good enough to provide a service as a sole proprietor so they have to work for someone and be told on what to do. This is a mindset which was applicable to the 90’s… and now it’s changing and you have to find your own ways to make more money.
Some people might think, because they didn’t go to business school like me, so how can they consult people to succeed at their business and help them make more money? Remember there is no consulting school or degree which will give you the practical skills you need to run a successful consulting business. Now there are MBA’s and other masters degree’s you could think would help you. But the truth is it does not give you the skills you need to make money selling your services and expertise.
Pretty much to start as a consultant, it only needs a day and I can show you to get started with your website and all under 4 hours. To make the very best of a website and optimize it with some content to make your prospects to find you easily, you may need few days. However as long as you have the phone and the email you can start cold calling and emailing to get gigs from then and there, as soon as you launch your website.
I have lined down some steps and you may follow these to get your first paying client:
- Be specific about what you are good at and pick the best skill you have after researching the market demand. Run a Google keyword Tool research to see how many searches are done monthly to find the numbers for the service you are planning to provide.
Chris Guillebeau at $100 Startup says do not be a “Business Consultant” or a “Life Coach” – get specific about what you can really do for someone.
- Research the market demand and the prices other professionals are charging in your industry or similar industries. You can be cheap depending on your local market but I would say no one values the cheap consultant. Also not like a fulltime job, you may in the beginning not have a lot of hours of consulting gigs to support yourself if you are unemployed or this is your only income stream.
At $100 Startup, Chris advice to charge at least $100 an hour or a comparable fixed rate for the benefit you provide.
- Write them down all and be very clear about what you offer and how it will help people and how much you will charge for your service.
Opening for business
Now it’s time to plan the implementation. First get your website site up and make a statement of “How you will help clients” describe the value you are offering and how it will help them solve their problems.
Tell the people in your words how they will receive the benefit and how long it will take for the ROI. You have to very clear about how you clients can benefit from your consultation. As Frank Kern points out, consultation is a $27 billion annual business. People want you to solve their problems.
One of my friends started a WordPress training course to help people from a personal experience she had when she was struggling to launch her first website. And now she teaches and consults for small businesses around the country and other countries in Europe.
Display your rates on the website. And have an “About Me” page to describe who you are and how you can help. Have your story nicely written.
At $100 Startup Chris Guillebeau tells to have those on your website:
Your basic website should contain these elements:
> The core benefit you provide for clients and what qualifies you to provide it (remember that qualifications may have nothing to do with education or certifications)
> At least two stories of how others have been helped by the service (if you don’t have paying clients yet, do the work for free and ask for testimonials.
> Pricing details (always be upfront about fees; never make potential clients write or call to find out how much something costs)
> How to hire you immediately (this should be very easy)
You will find clients through (word-of-mouth, Google, blogging, standing on the Oxford street or the High street corner of your town, etc.).
And write down “I will have my first client on or before a certain date”
Welcome to consulting! You’re now in business.
So now it’s time to pitch your prospects, find numbers and email addresses from Google. Do 5 to 10 calls day. Email 10 people everyday asking for referrals or ask if they need your service.
This is one of the reasons why people tend to go work at a job they literally hate to pitch. And it is easy to do what is told and serve clients your sales department or boss bought you. Now that is fine as long as you are doing what you love.
I have some email templates I use and send me a mail if you need a few to send the businesses or people who you think you can help.
If I didn’t cover your questions please ask at the comments below and I will be happy to answer your questions. For example you might think can I have my website designed and launched in 1 day? Yes it is possible to set up and launch your personal consulting website in an hour.
