If you run your own business, you will need to ensure that you learn the best ways to motivate your staff. When employees are greatly dissatisfied, this can cause decreased productivity.
Here are some effective techniques to help you motivate your staff:
Show Your Employees That You Care
You can do this by simply choosing to respect your staff. Make sure that you arrive for meetings early or call ahead (30min to 1hr before the meeting starts) to say that you would be late. Say “good morning” and never forget to say your “thank you’s”. Also returning emails and phone calls in a timely fashion is one way of showing your staff that you care – this is sure to motivate them to do well.
Be an Attentive Listener
Listening attentively to a member of your staff by not doing any of the following:
- Ordering food
- Answering phone calls
- Watching other people that walk past your office
- Setting appointments
Never Talk Down to your Employees!
A lot of employers are guilty of this; they shout at their employees because they feel that they have a right to this and because they sign the paychecks! You need to understand that employees may sometimes have an insightful understanding of how to move the company forward. When a good employee feels underappreciated; they go looking for employers who appreciate good employees.
You do not have to give away an expensive item in order to reward a hardworking staff. You can reward with gift cards, lunch, spa-date, discounts, etc.
Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk!
If you want your staff to arrive at the office on time, then you should arrive at the office on time. If you expect that your staff keeps the promises that they have made to your organization; you should keep the promises that you have made to them. If you expect your staff to always keep to the highest standards; then you should keep to the highest standards yourself.
You need to understand that your staff is keeping a close eye on you, even when you strongly believe that they are not. So, you need to set the tone. As soon as you step foot through the front door of your establishment, you need to ensure that are upbeat and positive if you want your staff to be upbeat and positive too.
