Google’s page rank was known as one of the most important ranking factors. It was a clearly visible and powerful element that was used to describe the value of a website. But over the years, Google stopped showing interest in updating its page rank metric, the last time Google updated this metric was in 5/6, December 2013. Also, Google’s John Mueller has already said on 22 Jan, 2014 that Google has no plans to do further updates in page rank metric.
That clearly shows that Google’s page rank is finally dead. In this case, how can SEO webmasters calculate the authority of a website, what substitute can they use as a ranking factor? This is a big question that is creating so much trouble for SEO guys. But you would be happy to know that there are some alternatives of page rank that can be used for analyzing a website’s value.
Search companies like Ahrefs, Moz and Majestic SEO have been developing their own SEO metrics for measuring a website’s ranking and authority. In this post I will be covering three SEO resources as a substitute for Google page rank:
Moz is one of the largest communities of SEO that has been building internet marketing tools to make SEO analysis easier. This firm has also built a toolbar called MozBar that is used to analyze a webpage. This toolbar is available for both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome to access significant SEO metrics for estimating the popularity and authority of a webpage.
This toolbar depicts two important ranking factors that can be utilized to anticipate the SEO importance of a web page:
- MOZ Trust
MozTrust is a “global link trust score” that measures the trust of a link instead of the popularity. Moz calculate the MozTrust by evaluating the distance between the webpage and its trust source. It means more closeness with a trusted website will get more trust value for your webpage which is measured from 0 to 10.
- MOZ Page Authority
Page authority of Moz is a system that provides score to a webpage out of 100 points. It is designed to measure the probability of getting ranked on SERP for a webpage. To increase the page authority of a webpage you need to improve the whole SEO of your website as this factor emphasize on complete link profile, MozTrust and Moz Rank.
- Ahrefs URL Rank
Ahrefs is an SEO tool that scrutinizes website content as well as its backlinks. Ahrefs has its own SEO metric that is called “Ahrefs URL rank”. It is a great alternative of Google page rank that is measured by calculating the effect of backlinks and link juice given to a web page. Ahrefs URL rank provides score to a webpage between 0 to 100 points.
The algorithm of Ahrefs does not permit a webpage to pass more than 80% of its rating to another web page. In other words, if a page has a 100 rating and 10 do-follow links then it can’t pass more than 80 rating. Later, this rating 80 is allocated among the do-follow links and every URL acquires a rating of 8. This is a recurring process that is repeated many times for each page. Hence, the rating is circulated all over the link profile.
Ahrefs URL Rank is becoming very popular substitute to Google’s page rank which is currently helping thousands of webmasters to analyze and calculate the popularity of a webpage.
Majestic is a great online marketing firm that has one of the largest databases of commercial link intelligence across the globe. It is a good competitor of Moz and Ahrefs when it comes to finding the alternatives of Page Rank.
The firm has developed two link metrics that help SEO webmasters to effectively calculate the value of a webpage.
- Majestic – Trust Flow
Majestic trust flow is another great alternative of Google page rank that can be used to examine the trustworthiness of a webpage. It anticipates the trust value of a webpage based on the trusted backlinks that comes from third party websites. This metric derived from a huge group of webpages that includes each trusted website on the web.
The metric will consider your website highly trusted if your website has got a large number of organic inbound links. Majestic Trust Flow provides values for the trust flow score between 0 and 100.
- Majestic– Citation Flow
Majestic Citation Flow is valuable factor that predicts the popularity of a web page based on the number of sites that links to it. According to the citation flow, if a webpage has more backlinks then it might be more popular, but it doesn’t mean that this metric does not take the quality of backlinks into account. This factor largely depends on trust flow, if trust flow increases, then citation flow should also increase.
Overall, Moz, Majestic, and Ahrefs have built some great SEO metrics that you can use in place of Google page rank. All these SEO measurement methods have their own correlation with search ranking, so it would be better to use each metric to perform a detailed analysis of a webpage.
